Redfern Community Facility
2020 - 2024
Gadi Country
A dedicated place and presence for Aboriginal community members in Redfern - a place of great historic national significance as the epicentre of activism and Aboriginal Rights in Australia.
Working in collaboration with Indigenous designer, Danièle Hromek of Djinjama, Heritage Architect Jean Rice and Historian Noni Boyd, we considered both the cultural and built history of the place including the Aboriginal significance of the site and area prior to colonization, original ecology and contemporary Aboriginal cultural and heritage significance. This informed our design approach to the proposed alterations, insertions and upgrades.
The brief for the project was to make the building accessible however there was also an opportunity to re-frame the building and how it might better serve the community. New works consider how it might provide a safe, more welcoming place for all and a celebratory entry experience that pays greater respect to the Country that was, is and continues to be.
